Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday
Many people wonder why Mardi Gras 'floats' through the
calendar months of February, March and April. Mardi Gras falls on the
Tuesday before Ash Wednesday otherwise known as the beginning of Lent.
Lent always falls 40 days before Easter excluding Sundays. Easter
falls on the first Sunday following the arbitrary Paschal Full Moon, which
does not necessarily coincide with a real or astronomical full moon.
To calculate the Paschal Full Moon, divide the year by 19 (preferably in
longhand), add 1 to the remainder, and apply this figure to the table below.
Easter will fall on the following Sunday after the date in the chart.

If you're still following this...for the year 2000 the key is 6 (or April
18). Since April 18th in the year 2000 is a Tuesday, Easter Sunday is
April 23rd. A word of warning if you're still calculating...if the
Paschal Full Moon falls on Sunday, Easter is on the following Sunday.
The earliest Easter can fall is March 23rd and the latest is April 25th.
